Medicare 101

We have a lot of challenges in Home Health next year.   No savior came to our rescue.  Congress has absolutely no reason whatsoever to overlook home health when cutting the budget.  They also  have every reason in the world to come after home health for fraud and abuse and they have with a vengeance.  They show no signs of stopping now and if you have been paying attention, nobody is safe.  I have clients with as few as 100 patients undergoing a ZPIC audit and we know that the larger companies are not excused from scrutiny, either.

So before you get serious about implementing new programs and creating new ways to improve care while reducing costs, spend a little to make sure that you as a nurse or you as agency are building upon a sound foundation that protects you if you find yourself under scrutiny.

Take the Medicare Quiz and when you are through, you will see your results immediately.  Let me know what you think of it.

Good Luck.

Great quiz! Required attention to detail and broad knowledge of Medicare rules/regs. What score is considered passing? I thought 87% was pretty good!

    • I should probably take the 90 passing rate off. In my opinion, it depends on the questions you miss. If a field nurse is not sure how a PEP is calculated, so what? On the other hand if a nurse thinks that it is okay to see a patient in a physician office, that’s a huge problem even if every other answer was correct!

yikes, only 67%, although I was distracted at work with multiple conversations going on around me. I did foreward the test to my clinical educator to try – just for fun. hehe

I thought I knew a lot more about Medicare but this quiz showed me that I have a lot more to learn. 73% not exactly what I expected but it let me know I need to go back and look at the benefits manual more often. Thanks for the challenge. I am thinking about asking my supervisor if other staff can take this test as well. It is a good review for all of us.

    • You would think that a home health consultant would know this stuff off the top of her head but I assure you that the Medicare Benefits Manual is one of the most frequently referenced files on my computer. And it never fails. As soon as I find what I am looking for, I kick myself for not remembering it. It also helps when I work with clients to show them the actual source of my advice. It is one thing for Julianne, the eccentric consultant, to tell a client that teaching and training the same thing is not a skill for 16 consecutive episodes because the patient is forgetful. It is a far more powerful thing to show them the language out of the Benefits Manual. That is also the case for nurses teaching nurses inside the agency although I concede that most of you are not as eccentric as I am.

Your spelling is terrible. You need a proof-reader from now on for your quizes!

    • My spelling is actually very good. My typing is at times a problem. Are you available to proofread for me? I could obviously use the help. Thanks for the feedback.
